Which PokéBonk starter should you choose?
Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle offer three different ways to learn PokéBonk. Choose for the way you want to survive the opening, then build around the moves and upgrades that actually appear during your run.
The PokéBonk starters at a glance
Your first partner gives you an opening attack, a native passive and a route toward later moves. These are the versions used in PokéBonk: Bulbasaur has Synthesis, Charmander has Sea of Flames, and Squirtle has Torrent Shell. Familiar names do not mean their abilities work exactly as they do in a turn-based Pokémon game.
| Starter | Opening move | Passive focus | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bulbasaur | Vine Whip | Regeneration, healing and Grass attacks | Players who want recovery while learning to move |
| Charmander | Ember | Fire damage and a low-health damage bonus | Players who enjoy an offensive build |
| Squirtle | Water Gun | Armor, a shield and a low-health bonus | Players who prefer a defensive starting point |
There is no need to decide which is universally strongest before you play. A partner that lets you avoid damage and collect experience reliably is a useful first choice, even if a different starter later becomes your favorite.
Bulbasaur: a recovery-focused first partner
Bulbasaur starts with Vine Whip. Its move route shown in the character information continues through Razor Leaf, Sleep Powder and Solar Beam. That route describes the character's kit; it does not mean all four attacks are equipped when you enter the forest.
Synthesis supports a recovery-focused approach. It provides regeneration and improves healing, while Grass attacks can also return a little health. The practical attraction is room to recover from occasional mistakes. It still matters where you stand: regeneration cannot make a crowded path safe, and repeated contact can overwhelm the health you recover.
Choose Bulbasaur if your first priority is understanding the arena. Keep moving, collect experience when the route is clear and compare new offers with your existing Grass attacks. A healing benefit is easier to use when you are also preventing damage. Taking an offensive upgrade can be sensible when enemies are staying alive long enough to surround you.
Charmander: build around Fire damage
Charmander opens with Ember. Fire Spin, Flamethrower and Fire Blast appear later in its displayed move route. The useful distinction is between the attack you have now and the attacks you may work toward during the run. Base your next decision on the current offer rather than assuming the complete route is already active.
Sea of Flames benefits Fire damage and also increases damage at low health. This makes Charmander an appealing choice if you like building an aggressive attacker and watching how offensive upgrades change a fight. The low-health part is a safety margin to understand, not a reason to walk into enemies deliberately.
For an early Charmander run, judge upgrades by the problem on screen. If you can clear enemies but keep losing health while collecting experience, a defensive choice can help more than another damage bonus. If you have space to move but cannot clear a route, improve the attacks that are actually hitting targets. A focused Fire build still needs a safe way through the arena.
Squirtle: a defensive foundation
Squirtle begins with Water Gun. Its displayed route then includes Bubble, Rapid Spin and Hydro Pump. As with the other starters, only the first move is equipped at the start; the later names describe development, not four opening weapons.
Torrent Shell combines armor with a shield and a damage benefit when health is low. Its role is defensive, which can be reassuring while you learn interaction prompts, enemy pressure and the layout of a new area. A shield is useful protection, but it does not remove the need to watch your remaining health.
Pick Squirtle if you would rather begin with a defensive cushion and add offense as you go. Pay attention to whether the build is clearing enough space to collect experience. Surviving longer without gathering experience can leave you with fewer useful choices, so balance protection with reliable damage. Use the pause information to review your moves when you are unsure what your latest pick changed.
Make the choice useful beyond the opening
A fresh profile offers twelve starting partners, including Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Choosing one sets your first selected partner; all twelve are available in your League, so you can try another without completing a challenge first. The full League has 79 characters, with the remaining entries still earned through their displayed requirements and capture. Seeing a species in the Pokédex is not the same as owning it in your League.
For a useful comparison, try the same available region and difficulty with each partner. You can compare these three immediately, then explore the other starting characters when you want a different approach. Notice where the run becomes difficult: moving through crowds, collecting experience, staying healthy or dealing with a guardian. Those observations tell you more than a tier list that ignores your Lab upgrades and the offers you received.
Start with Bulbasaur for recovery, Charmander for a Fire-focused attack plan or Squirtle for a defensive base. Then let the run's actual choices shape the build. The How to Play guide follows the first-run screens in order, and the Upgrades guide explains how to judge an offer without committing to a fixed shopping list.
Questions before choosing a starter
Do starters begin with every move shown in their kit?
No. The opening move is Vine Whip, Ember or Water Gun. The other moves listed for that starter belong to its later move route.
Should I stay at low health to use a passive?
No. A low-health damage bonus does not make incoming damage harmless. For a first run, keep a safe route and take healing when you need it.
Can I judge a starter from one unsuccessful run?
One attempt shows you its opening, but upgrades, Lab progression and your movement also affect the result. Compare the parts you can control before deciding that a partner does not suit you.
